Working Together: Delivering Added-value Grain-based Foods through School Meals
The Grains for Health Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses, prioritizes, and applies grain-based research to help solve today’s public health challenges.
The conference at The Depot in downtown Minneapolis brought together experts from academia, government, professional associations, industry, and school foodservice to continue discussing how to enhance public health by improving the development, delivery and consumption of grains, grain components (dietary fiber / bran) and whole grain foods with superior health attributes.
After various presentations by experts from academia, interest groups, and industry as well as field trips to industry and school foodservice sites, participants exhibited increased communication and desire to understand each others’ business in order to increase whole grain/fiber availability and consumption in school meals.
Industry participants found that their top need from school food service is to gain a better understanding of school food service’s regulations and business.
School foodservice identified the highest priority contribution that industry partners could make would be to use the industry’s lobbying power to ask for increased funding for school meals December 2008 Meeting.
